If you grew up having classic shake and bake pork chops, then you are going to love this copycat version!
Just like my recipe for homemade shake and bake chicken, this pork chop version is made with super simple ingredients to deliver breaded pork chops that are juicy, crispy, and super delicious.
And believe it or not, Homemade Shake and Bake Pork Chops are JUST as easy to make as making shake and bake pork chops using a store-bought package. But with this version, you can leave some of the questionable ingredients on the shelf.
A Few Tips Before We Get Started
- Bone-in or Boneless Pork Chops? I have included baking instructions for both in the recipe card, but bone-in chops will be juicier.
- Use plain breadcrumbs NOT panko. This is one recipe that plain breadcrumbs trump panko.
- Seasoning Variations: Swap out the seasoned salt for your favorite spice blends, like Cajun or Adobo seasoning, for extra flavor.
- Use Mayonnaise. Coat pork chops with mayo rather than using an egg wash to help the breading stick. This adds flavor and keeps the pork chops moist. Olive oil works too.
- Easy Breading: Use a gallon storage bag to shake and bread the pork chops with less mess. Plus the recipe is called shake n bake for a reason.😉
- Bake or Air-Fry: Both methods are tasty!
How to Make Crispy Shake and Bake Pork Chops
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
1. Prepare Homemade Shake and Bake. Simply combine the seasonings with the breadcrumbs in a large storage bag OR large mixing bowl.
2. Prepare Pork Chops. It is important to blot the pork chops with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Afterwards, brush the pork evenly with a thin coating of mayonnaise or olive oil.
3. Bread Pork Chops. Working one at a time, place a pork chop into the breading mixture, seal the bag, and toss to evenly coat the pork chop with breading. Remove the pork chop from the bag, shake off excess breading (right back into the bag) and place the breaded pork chop an a lightly greased baking sheet.
4. Bake. To ensure the shake n bake pork chops get crispy, yet remain juicy, I recommend baking the pork chops at a high temperature, flip halfway through the bake time, and bake the pork chops until they reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees F.
Recipe Modifications
- Air Fryer Shake n Bake Pork Chops: Prepare the pork chops as directed. Once breaded lightly spray them with cooking spray, place them into the basket of your air fryer, and air fry at 400°F for 6 minutes. Flip, and continue to air-fry for an additional 5-8 minutes, or until the pork reaches an internal temperature of 145°F.
- Make it Spicy: Add up to ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper and/or swap out the seasoned salt for 2 teaspoons of Cajun seasoning in the breadcrumb mixture to add a little kick to the pork chop recipe. Amp it up even more by stirring 1 teaspoon of hot sauce into the mayonnaise before coating the pork with it.
- Put an Italian Spin on It: To season the shake and bake coating, omit the celery salt, seasoned salt, and paprika from the recipe. Instead, flavor the plain bread crumbs with 2 teaspoons of kosher salt, 2 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon dried parsley, and 2 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon dried oregano. I would recommend brushing the pork chops with olive oil rather than using mayonnaise for an Italian-style Shake n Bake pork chop recipe.
Storage Instructions
- Refrigerate: Allow the baked pork chops to cool slightly, then transfer them to an airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Freezing: I don’t recommend freezing breaded cooked pork chops, as the breading can become soggy when defrosted.
- Reheat: To keep the coating crispy, don’t microwave the leftovers. Instead, reheat the pork chops in a 400 degree F oven for 3-4 minutes, broil them for 1- 2 minutes per side, OR air-fry the at 370 degrees F for 2-3 minutes.
